OBS Video Quick Start Guide

I created a short screencast quick start guide for the video streaming software OBS.

Situation

While working on my technical communication degree, I was assigned the task of creating a minimalist video guide demonstrating how to navigate and use a piece of software to complete basic tasks.

Task

To show new users how to use OBS, I needed to record a short video (between 90 and 150 seconds) demonstrating the process of setting up OBS and starting a live stream. This video needed to include audio narration describing the process and visual markers.

Action

I began by setting up OBS and starting recording while noting each of the actions necessary to complete the process. Next, I created a detailed script and storyboard based on those notes and screenshots, which you can see an excerpt of below.

I recorded the audio narration for the quick start guide based on this script, then a screen recording of me performing the actions in time to the audio.

I then edited the audio narration and video of the screen recording to match their timing and to remove mistakes. Once the narration and screen recording were synchronized, I added visual effects, transitions, intro music, and outro music

Result

This project developed and displayed my ability to use screencasting tools, produce help content for technology users, and script, record, and edit video and audio content.
